EDSP Orkney
Eating Disorder Support Project
Getting the right support
With the right support, recovery is possible but there is no quick fix. The development of an eating disorder is a complex process and it takes time to learn and put into practice new thinking and behaviour patterns that clearly contradict a sufferers natural instincts.

Below is a list of local services who can provide help and support. There is also information on the Eden Unit, a specialised unit based in Aberdeen at the Royal Cornhill Hospital.

GP
Whether you are a sufferer or carer your GP is here to help. Some have more experience and understanding of eating disorders than others but do persevere. GP’s are there to listen and can make referrals to other agencies on your behalf.

The Eden Unit
This unit is based in Aberdeen at the Royal Cornhill Hospital and provides intensive inpatient treatment for patients with severe eating disorders.  These are predominately patients with severe anorexia nervosa who are dangerously underweight and/or have not responded to less intensive forms of treatment. The unit primarily caters for adult patients aged 18 years and over.

Prior to admission patients will have had a comprehensive assessment by local (Orkney) specialist services. Normally this would include assessment by a consultant psychiatrist with a special interest in eating disorders from the local specialist services in eating disorders, but where that is not possible then the psychiatric assessment will include detailed input from the consultant psychiatrist from the Eden Unit.
